From the rocks of New Zealand’s high mountains the sediments of our braided rivers are formed. It is in these sediments that the Black-fronted Tern breeds, in nests so rudimentary they are barely more than a scrape.

The channels of these great rivers repeatedly branch and rejoin, creating interweaving patterns of flowing water and island beds. Wading through the silt and shallows the Pied Stilt daintily picks out dinner.
